The journal was founded in 2011 by Institute of Marine Biology FEB RAS, but began to be regularly published from 2014. Up to 2017 the journal was named Biodiversity and Environment of Far East Reserves (ISSN 2227-149X); during 2018–2020 — Biodiversity and Environment of Protected Areas (ISSN 2618-6764). In 2021 the journal has changed its founders and title for Biodiversity and Environment of Natural Areas. Recent founders of the journal — Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Federal Scientific Center of the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FSCEATB FEB RAS).
