Vascular plants of the Russia Island (the Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan)

Year: 2001, Issue: XLVIII, Pages: 55 - 84

Only 498 species of vascular plants was reported for the largest islands of the Peter the Great Bay. Significant part from them are specified on the basis of the old publications and personal messages. But the area and geographical conditions of the Russki Island do not justify a modest third place, which the island takes among all islands of the Peter the Great Bay. The reason of the lack of floristic knowledge on vascular flora of the island was the absence of large-scale botanical works from 1922, because the island was used by the Soviet Navy. As the result of author's researches undertaken in 1997-1999 the significant number of the species not mentioned earlier was assembled. Moreover a number of plant species collections was foude by authors in the Herbarium of V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute, Saint-Petersburg (LE). Thus, revealed vascular plants flora of the Russki Island has increased on 295 species, i. e. in 1,5 time in the comparison with data of the last report (Probatova et al., 1998). Russki Island has taken the first place in the list of island floras of the Peter the Great Bay: 793 species.
