Dear colleagues!
We are happy to invite you to take a part in the International conference "Bryoflora of the Russian Far East: taxonomy, genesis, phytogeographic relations".
The conference is scheduled on September 3-12, 2010, and will be held in Vladivostok, Russia.
Conference location
The flora of the Russian Far East demonstrates striking difference from the floras of the rest of Russia. These differences are especially visible in the southernmost of the area, in Primorsky Territory that belongs to Sino-Japanese floral region. The vascular flora of this region is extraordinarily rich in species and contains 14 endemic families and over 300 endemic genera (for comparison, endemic families lack in vast Circumboreal region, and the number of endemic genera just exceeds 40). The south of the Russian Far East is the only location in Russia for a great number of species (more than 80 species of liverworts, 120 of mosses and more than 500 species of vascular plants).
Broadleaved deciduous trees (3 species of linden (Tilia), 2 species of ash (Fraxinus), Amur cork-tree (Phellodendron amurense), Castor aralia (Kalopanax septemlobum), Manchurian walnut (Juglans mandshurica), 7 species of maple (Acer)) along with temperate dark coniferous trees (needle fir (Abies holophylla), Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis)) form forests astonishing in their composition and structure, with dense understorey of various Manchurian shrubs, interwoven with woody vines, such as actinidias (Actinidia), wild Amur grape (Vitis amurensis), Chinese magnolia (Schizandra chinensis), spindle-trees (Celastrus). The bryoflora of the south of the Russian Far East is also very peculiar. There are Trichocoleopsis sacculata, Jubula japonica, Macvicaria ulophylla, Plicanthus birmensis, Miyabea fruticella, Hypopterigium flavolimbatum, Meteorium buchananii, Boulaya mittenii, Bryonoguchia molkenboeri and many other species.
Additional information on flora and vegetation og the Russian Far East can be found in Geobotanica Pacifica
One may say that the European part of Russia would be a better place for bryological conference, because most of our Russian colleagues-bryologists work there, and it would be easier to meet somewhere in Moscow or St. Petersburg: air tickets are not too expensive, and the collections are closer. However, we don't want to limit ourselves by just discussions on Far Eastern bryophytes, but also would like to make you familiar with the unique (and, so far, not heavily disturbed by human) nature of the Far East. In addition, we plan a series of review lectures to show the peculiarity of flora and vegetation of the Russian Far East.
We hope very much that the conference will bring us to new understanding of one of the most important components of the Far Eastern biota, the bryophytes, and will be very useful for everyone

The objective of the conference
to discuss the composition, the genesis and the phytogeographic relations of the bryoflora of the Russian Far East, as well as taxonomy of particular bryophyte groups.
During the conference we intend to develop approaches for preparation of the book "BRYOFLORA OF THE RUSSIAN FAR EAST". After the conference, we plan an 8-day field trip through Primorsky Province. A workshop on bryophyte identification will be organized before the field trip.

Excursions
The sessions will be followed by 8-day field trip through the wild places in the south of Primorsky territory with a lot of stays in the tents.
PRELIMINARY EXCURSION SCHEDULE
Since the traveling from the European part of Russia, or even from Siberia, to the Far East requires significant financial outlay, we try to receive some extra funding to minimize participants' expenses for the field trips, organization of which is also quite costly in the Far East. Exact cost of excursion will be determined before the end of April, 2010.
Registration
For preliminary registration, we would like to ask you to fill out THE FORM and send it to the address bryo_vlad@list.ru before January 31, 2010. Please don't postpone registration, the greater number of potential participants the better chances to obtain additional financial support for field trip.
The registration fee in amount of 600 roubles (~US$ 20) must be paid on-site in cash. It covers participation in all conference sessions, all materials and refreshments between the sessions. The registration fee does not cover field excursion.
Accommodation
In Vladivostok, there are many hotels that cover the spectrum of rates from US$50 to $200 per room per night. On the way of our field trip there will be no hotels, only log cabins and campsites with tents.
